Euripides’s Greek classic, given a new twist: revitalised and rocked up!

One of the greatest of all Greek tragedies – savage, comic and intensely lyrical – The Bacchae powerfully dramatises the conflict between the emotional and rational sides of the human psyche. The magnetic young Dionysus – icon, hedonist, god – returns home with his cult of female followers to exact his revenge, unleashing the full force of female sexuality on the city.

THE BACCHAE NEEDS YOU!

There will be an extra casting session for “The Bacchae” this coming Monday, the 26th of January, at our usual rehearsal venue, the Spread Eagle on Wilbraham Road, Chorlton.

Basically, we’re now looking to cast our all-female “Greek Chorus”… now this doesn’t mean you have to be able to sing… a Greek chorus often simply speak, or chant the words in unison… mind you, if you CAN sing, then it opens up the options available to our director!

The Greek chorus ARE “The Bacchae”… Dionysus’ cult of female followers who appear from time to time during the show, progressing the narrative.

So, if you’re interested, please come along at 8pm, in the basement bar of the Spread Eagle.

The Chorlton Players are a non-profit-making theatre group established in 1963, so we’ve been going for over fifty years now. Our group has about forty members, and we put on five productions per season at the Parish Hall on St Werburgh’s Road, Chorlton.

We meet every Monday and Wednesday evening for rehearsals and are always keen to see new members. Even if you don’t fancy acting, we are always in need of all the other talents it takes to put productions on: backstage, costumes, front of house, set-building, audio-visuals, make-up, advertising etc. So if you are interested in taking any part in our shows, please get in touch.
